Equivalent fractions

Grade 5 · Math · Free lesson

Hello there! I am Studyfin, your friendly learning buddy. Today we will explore how different fractions can show the exact same amount!

Fractions are like fair sharing. Sometimes, we can cut a pizza into different numbers of slices, but still eat the same total amount.

Let us use our reading skills to understand this. The word 'equality' has the suffix '-ity', which means a state of being. So, 'equality' means the state of being equal. In math, equivalent fractions have equality because they share the same value.

We can think about the word 'placement'. The suffix '-ment' means the action or result of something. When we find the placement of fractions on a number line, we see that equivalent fractions land on the exact same spot!

Show how the fraction 1/3 is equivalent to 2/6 step-by-step.

  1. First, draw a rectangle and divide it into 3 equal parts to represent the denominator.
  2. Second, shade in 1 part to show the numerator. This represents the fraction 1/3.
  3. Third, draw a horizontal line right through the middle of the rectangle. This doubles the total parts to 6.
  4. Fourth, count the shaded parts. Now, 2 parts out of 6 are shaded.
  5. Finally, observe that the total shaded area did not change. Therefore, 1/3 is equal to 2/6!
