Estimate the sum of 34 and 58 by rounding each number to the nearest ten.
Find the target place value, which is the tens place. For 34, the digit in the tens place is 3.
Look at the digit to the right, which is 4. Since 4 is less than 5, we round down. 34 becomes 30.
For 58, the digit in the tens place is 5. Look to the right to see 8. Since 8 is 5 or more, we round up. 58 becomes 60.
Add the two rounded numbers together: 30 + 60 = 90.
Our final estimated sum is 90.
