Multiples are what you get when you multiply a number by other whole numbers. Think of them like skip-counting or taking giant leaps down a number line!
✏️ Worked example
Find the common factors of 8 and 12, then identify the Greatest Common Factor (GCF).
- First, list all the factors of 8 by finding pairs that multiply to 8: 1 x 8, and 2 x 4. So, the factors of 8 are: 1, 2, 4, and 8.
- Next, list all the factors of 12: 1 x 12, 2 x 6, and 3 x 4. So, the factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
- Now, look for the factors that appear in both lists. The common factors are 1, 2, and 4.
- Finally, choose the largest number from the common factors. The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of 8 and 12 is 4!
