Hi there! I'm Studyfin, and today we're going on a tasty adventure to discover how fractions help us share things fairly!
Imagine you have a delicious, fresh pizza to share with your best friend. To make it fair, you need to cut it into equal parts so you both get the exact same amount.
When we divide one whole object into equal pieces, we create fractions! The bottom number of a fraction is the denominator, which tells us how many equal pieces we cut the whole into.
The top number is the numerator, which tells us how many of those equal pieces we are talking about. If you eat 3 out of 4 slices of pizza, you have eaten three-fourths of the pizza!
Sophia cut a giant chocolate bar into 8 equal pieces. She gave 5 pieces to her friends. What fraction of the chocolate bar did she give away?
- Find the total number of equal pieces. There are 8 pieces in total, so our bottom number (denominator) is 8.
- Find the number of pieces Sophia gave away. She gave away 5 pieces, so our top number (numerator) is 5.
- Put the numerator over the denominator to write the fraction: 5/8.
- We read this fraction out loud as 'five-eighths'!
