When we have a group of numbers, we can find special values to help us understand them. Today, we will look at four helpful tools: mean, median, mode, and range.
The mean is the average of your numbers. To find it, add all the numbers together first, then divide that total by how many numbers you have.
The median is the middle number when you line them up from smallest to largest. The mode is the number that appears the most often, and the range is the difference between the biggest and smallest numbers.
✏️ Worked example
Find the mean, median, mode, and range for this set of math quiz scores: 5, 8, 8, 10, 9.
Step 1: Put the scores in order from least to greatest. Our sorted list is: 5, 8, 8, 9, 10.
Step 2: Find the Mean. Add the scores together: 5 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 = 40. Now divide by the 5 scores: 40 divided by 5 is 8.
Step 3: Find the Median. Look at our sorted list: 5, 8, 8, 9, 10. The middle number is the third one, which is 8.
Step 4: Find the Mode. Look for the number that shows up the most. The score 8 shows up twice, so 8 is the mode.
Step 5: Find the Range. Subtract the smallest score from the largest score: 10 minus 5 is 5.
