Measurement helps us answer questions like 'How tall am I?' or 'How much juice is left in my glass?' We use different tools and units depending on what we want to measure!
To find out how long or tall something is, we measure its length. When using a ruler, always line up the very edge of your object with the 0 mark, not the physical edge of the ruler!
Capacity measures how much space a liquid takes up inside a container. We use tools like measuring cups marked with milliliters (mL) or ounces to make sure we have the exact amount of liquid.
Maya wants to measure the length of her new eraser using a centimeter ruler. She lines up the left side of the eraser with the 0 mark. The right side of the eraser ends exactly at the number 5. How long is Maya's eraser?
- Identify the starting point: Make sure the left edge of the eraser is aligned perfectly with the 0 mark on the ruler.
- Trace across the object: Look from left to right along the top of the ruler until you reach the very end of the eraser.
- Read the ending number: Find the number on the ruler that lines up with the right edge of the eraser. In this case, it is 5.
- Add the unit: Since Maya is using a centimeter ruler, we write our final answer with centimeters.
- State the final answer: Maya's eraser is exactly 5 centimeters long!
