Grade 5 · Math · Free lesson

Hi there! I'm Studyfin, your math buddy. Today, we are going to discover how multiplication is just a super-fast way to add things up!

Have you ever had to add the same number over and over again? Multiplication is our math superpower that helps us find the total of equal groups in a flash!

Imagine you have 3 friendly monsters, and each monster has 2 bright eyeballs. Instead of counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, we can think of this as 3 groups of 2!

2 Eyes2 Eyes2 Eyes3 groups of 2 = 6 eyeballs!

We write this in math using a little 'x' symbol. So, '3 groups of 2' becomes the multiplication sentence: 3 x 2 = 6. It's that simple!

✏️ Worked example

Let's find the total of 4 bags of delicious cookies, if each bag has 3 cookies inside.

  1. 1. Identify your groups: We have 4 bags of cookies (these are our 4 equal groups).
  2. 2. Identify the number in each group: Each bag contains exactly 3 cookies.
  3. 3. Write it as addition: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12.
  4. 4. Write it as multiplication: 4 groups of 3 is written as 4 x 3.
  5. 5. Find the final answer: 4 x 3 = 12 cookies in total!
