Hey there! I'm Studyfin, and today we are going to explore volume—which is just a fancy word for how much space a 3D object takes up!

Have you ever wondered how much water fits inside your favorite cup, or how many toys you can pack into a cardboard box? That is what volume is all about!

To measure volume, we use perfect little cubes called unit cubes. We count how many of these cubes can pack together tightly to completely fill up a 3D shape.

Stacking Unit Cubes!

When we find the volume of a rectangular prism (like a cereal box), we can use a quick shortcut! We multiply its length, times its width, times its height.

Length Width Height Volume = L × W × H
✏️ Worked example

Find the volume of a toy chest that is 4 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 2 inches tall.

  1. Identify the length (L), which is 4 inches.
  2. Identify the width (W), which is 3 inches.
  3. Identify the height (H), which is 2 inches.
  4. Write down our formula: Volume = Length × Width × Height.
  5. Multiply Length × Width first: 4 × 3 = 12.
  6. Multiply that answer by the Height: 12 × 2 = 24.
  7. State the final answer in cubic units: The volume of the toy chest is 24 cubic inches!
