We can show our changing data using graphs like histograms or box plots. A histogram groups numbers into equal intervals, showing how often values appear. This helps us see the shape of our data instantly.
Classify these two situations. Situation A: You ask one classmate, 'How many sisters do you have?' Situation B: You ask ten classmates, 'How many pets do you have?' Explain which situation yields data with variability.
- Step 1: Look at Situation A. You are asking only one person a single question. There is only one answer possible, like '2 sisters'. This data has no variability.
- Step 2: Look at Situation B. You are asking ten different classmates. Each person might have a different number of pets (like 0, 1, 3, or 2).
- Step 3: Compare the results. Situation A gives you one single number. Situation B gives you a spread of different numbers.
- Step 4: Conclude that Situation B yields data with variability because the answers can change from person to person.
