Grade 6 · Math · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly math tutor. Let's learn how to read dot plots to make smart money choices!

A budget is a plan for your money. It helps you track how much you save and how much you spend. We can use a dot plot to show this data clearly.

A dot plot uses dots on a number line to show how often a number appears. Each dot stands for one person or one event. It helps us see patterns in our spending habits.

To interpret a dot plot, we count the dots above each value. This tells us which budget choice is the most common. We can find the total amount spent by adding up the value of every single dot.

✏️ Worked example

Five students tracked how many dollars they saved this week. Their savings are shown on a dot plot. There is 1 dot over $2, 2 dots over $5, and 2 dots over $10. Let's interpret this data to find the total money saved by the group.

  1. First, look at the first value on the plot. We see 1 dot over $2. This means one student saved $2.
  2. Next, look at the next value. We see 2 dots over $5. We multiply 2 times $5 to get $10.
  3. Then, look at the last value. We see 2 dots over $10. We multiply 2 times $10 to get $20.
  4. Finally, add all the values together: $2 + $10 + $20 = $32.
  5. The total amount of money saved by the five students is $32!
