Every character in a story has a goal, and so do we in math! To change a larger unit to a smaller unit, we multiply. For example, since one foot has 12 inches, a three-foot board is 36 inches long.
When we convert a smaller unit to a larger unit, we do the opposite. We divide! If you have 24 inches of ribbon, you divide by 12 to find out that you have exactly 2 feet of ribbon.
Think of units like characters interacting. A yard is much bigger than an inch. To convert yards directly to inches, we multiply by 36 because there are 36 inches in every single yard.

- Identify the starting unit (yards) and the target unit (feet).
- Recall the conversion rate: 1 yard equals 3 feet.
- Decide whether to multiply or divide. Since yards are larger than feet, we multiply.
