Hey there! Today we are going to explore a magical math grid that helps us map out any point in space, just like a treasure map!
Imagine a flat surface that goes on forever. This is called a coordinate plane! We use it to find exact locations using two number lines that cross each other.
The flat number line going left to right is the x-axis. The vertical number line going up and down is the y-axis. Where they cross in the exact middle is called the origin (0,0).
To find a point like (3, 2), we always start at the origin. First, take 3 steps to the right along the x-axis, and then crawl 2 steps up along the y-axis. Remember: crawl before you climb!
✏️ Worked example
Plot the point (4, 3) on the coordinate plane.
Start with your pencil at the origin (0,0) where the two axes cross.
Look at the first number in the pair, which is 4. Move 4 units to the right along the horizontal x-axis.
Look at the second number in the pair, which is 3. From your current spot, move 3 units straight up.
Draw a dot at this final location and label it (4, 3)!
