A bar graph uses colorful bars to show counts of different categories. The taller or longer the bar, the larger the number it represents!
Every bar graph has two main lines called axes. The horizontal axis along the bottom shows the categories, and the vertical axis along the side shows the scale of numbers.
A group of friends voted on their favorite fruits: 3 voted for Apple, 5 voted for Banana, and 2 voted for Orange. If you made a bar graph of this data, which fruit would have the tallest bar, and how high would it go?
- Identify the counts for each category: Apple has 3, Banana has 5, and Orange has 2.
- Compare the numbers to find the largest count: 5 is the biggest number.
- Match the largest count back to its fruit: Banana has 5 votes.
- Conclude that Banana will have the tallest bar, and its height will reach up to the number 5 on the scale.
