Hey there! Today we are going to explore the wonderful world of decimals. They are just a super cool way to show numbers that live in between our regular whole numbers!
Imagine you have a whole chocolate bar, but you want to share it. If we cut that one whole bar into 10 equal pieces, each piece is called one-tenth. In decimals, we write this as 0.1!
The magic dot in the middle is called the decimal point. It separates our friendly whole numbers on the left from the smaller fractional parts on the right.
Let's look closely at tenths. If we divide a block into 10 equal columns and color in 4 of them, we have shaded 0.4 of the block. See how they fill up one by one!
✏️ Worked example
Convert the fraction 3/10 into a decimal and write down its name.
Look at the denominator (the bottom number), which is 10. This tells us we are dealing with 'tenths'.
The numerator (the top number) is 3, meaning we have 3 of those tenths.
Place the 3 right after the decimal point in the tenths place.
Write it as 0.3, which we read aloud as 'three-tenths'!
