Hey there! Ready to discover a cool math superpower? Exponents are like a shorthand code for multiplication!

Imagine you have a number that multiplies by itself over and over again, like 2 × 2 × 2 × 2. Writing that out can get tiring! Exponents are a shortcut to write these repeated multiplications quickly.

An exponent has two main parts: a big 'base' number on the bottom, and a tiny 'exponent' (or power) floating up high. The base tells us what number to multiply, and the tiny exponent tells us how many times to use it in our multiplication.

5 3 Base (Multiply me!) Exponent (How many times?)

Let's look at 2 to the power of 3 (written as 2³). This doesn't mean 2 × 3! Instead, it means we write down the base (2) three times, and multiply them together: 2 × 2 × 2, which equals 8.

= 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 Three 2s multiplied together, not 2 × 3!
✏️ Worked example

Evaluate the exponent 3⁴.

  1. Identify the base and the exponent. Here, the base is 3 and the exponent is 4.
  2. Write out the base (3) the number of times shown by the exponent (4): 3 × 3 × 3 × 3.
  3. Multiply the first two numbers: 3 × 3 = 9. Now our problem looks like 9 × 3 × 3.
  4. Multiply by the next 3: 9 × 3 = 27. Now we have 27 × 3.
  5. Multiply one last time: 27 × 3 = 81. So, 3⁴ = 81!
