Hey there! I'm Studyfin, and today we're going to explore fractions. Think of them as fair, delicious slices of your favorite pizza or bar of chocolate!
A fraction represents a part of a whole. When we divide something whole into equal pieces, each piece is a fraction of the entire thing.
Let's look at a bar split into four equal parts. If we color in just one of those parts, we have shaded exactly one-fourth (1/4) of the entire bar!
Every fraction has two main numbers. The top number is the numerator (how many parts we have), and the bottom number is the denominator (the total number of equal parts).
✏️ Worked example
Sarah ordered a fresh pizza cut into 8 equal slices. She happily ate 3 of those slices. What fraction of the pizza did Sarah eat?
Count the total number of equal slices in the whole pizza. There are 8 slices, which becomes our denominator (bottom number).
Count the number of slices Sarah actually ate. She ate 3 slices, which becomes our numerator (top number).
Write the numerator on top of the denominator, separated by a fraction line.
The final fraction is 3/8. Sarah ate 3/8 of the pizza!
