Long division (multi-digit)

Grade 6 · Math · Free lesson

Welcome! Today we will learn how to break big division problems into easy steps.

Long division helps us divide multi-digit numbers step by step. We use a repetitive process: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Bring Down.

We can analyze word parts to understand our math steps! The prefix trans- means across, so we transform numbers across place values. The suffix -ive means tending to, like a repetitive pattern that repeats.

1. Divide2. Multiply3. Subtract4. Bring Down

Let us evaluate the root words and affixes in our math methodology (-logy means study of). A super-group (super- means above or large) of numbers gets split into equal parts.

✏️ Worked example

Divide 68 by 2 using long division.

  1. 1. Identify the prefix trans- (across) as we move across digits from left to right.
  2. 2. Divide 6 by 2 to get 3. Write 3 above the 6.
  3. 3. Multiply 3 times 2 to get 6. Write 6 under the 6 and subtract to get 0.
  4. 4. Bring down the 8 next to 0 to transform the new number into 8.
  5. 5. Divide 8 by 2 to get 4. Write 4 above the 8.
  6. 6. The final quotient is 34 with no remainder!
