Mean, median, mode & range

Hey there! Today we are going to become data detectives and learn how to find the center of any group of numbers.

When we collect facts or numbers, we call it data. To understand our data, we need to ask a main research question, like 'How much time do my classmates spend reading?'

Sometimes our main question is too big. We can refine it by asking smaller, secondary questions, like 'What is the middle number of hours spent reading?' or 'Which amount of time shows up the most?'

Now we gather data from different sources, like surveys or books. To find the median, we line our numbers up from least to greatest and locate the exact middle value.

A group of students tracked how many books they read over the summer. Their data is: 3, 5, 3, 8, and 6 books. Let's practice refining our questions and finding the median and mode of this data set!

  1. First, we refine our main question: 'How much do kids read?' to a secondary question: 'What is the middle value and the most common value of books read in this group?'
  2. Next, we gather our data points: 3, 5, 3, 8, 6.
  3. To find the median, we arrange the numbers from least to greatest: 3, 3, 5, 6, 8.
  4. We locate the middle number in our ordered list. The number in the exact center is 5. So, the median is 5.
  5. To find the mode, we look for the number that appears the most. The number 3 appears twice, while the others appear only once. So, the mode is 3.
