Hi there! Today we will learn how to solve math problems with more than one step using PEMDAS.
When a math problem has many signs, we need rules to know what to do first. PEMDAS tells us the exact order to solve each part.
PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. Exponents come right after Parentheses! Just like analyzing evidence in a story to infer themes, we follow step-by-step evidence in math.
Always solve Parentheses first. Next, clear any Exponents, like 2 squared. Then, do Multiplication and Division from left to right. Last, do Addition and Subtraction.
✏️ Worked example
Evaluate the expression: 5 + (3² - 1) * 2
Look inside the parentheses first: (3² - 1).
Solve the exponent inside: 3² = 9.
Finish the parentheses: 9 - 1 = 8.
Multiply next: 8 * 2 = 16.
Add last: 5 + 16 = 21. The final answer is 21.
