Percentages

Grade 6 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there! Welcome! Today, we are going to explore percentages, which are just a super friendly way of showing parts of a whole.

Have you ever heard someone say they are '100% sure' about something? The word 'percent' literally means 'per hundred' or 'out of 100'. It is like dividing any group or object into 100 equal, tiny pieces.

pi

Imagine a grid of 100 squares. If we color in 50 of those squares, we have colored in 50% of the grid. That is exactly half of it!

50 out of 100 = 50%

Because percents are always out of 100, they are closely related to fractions. For example, 25% is the same as 25/100, which simplifies to 1/4 of the whole thing!

25% = 1/4 of the circle
