Probability is all about chance. When you flip a coin, roll a die, or guess if it will rain, you are dealing with events that have different chances of happening.
We can think of probability as a scale from 0 to 1. An event that is 'impossible' has a probability of 0, while an event that is 'certain' to happen has a probability of 1. Everything else falls right in the middle!
To find the probability of an event, we make a fraction. The bottom number (denominator) is the total number of possible outcomes. The top number (numerator) is the number of outcomes we are looking for.
You have a bag containing 3 red marbles and 5 blue marbles. If you reach in and pull out one marble without looking, what is the probability that you choose a red marble?
- First, find the total number of possible outcomes. Add the red and blue marbles together: 3 + 5 = 8 total marbles.
- Next, identify the number of favorable outcomes. Since we want to find the probability of choosing a red marble, look at how many red marbles there are: 3 red marbles.
- Write these numbers as a fraction. Put the favorable outcomes on top and the total outcomes on the bottom: 3/8.
- Check if the fraction can be simplified. 3/8 is already in its simplest form, so that is our final probability!
