A ratio is a comparison of two numbers. It tells us how much of one thing we have compared to another thing, like comparing apples to bananas in a fruit bowl!
Let's look at a simple ratio! If we have 3 delicious purple plums and 1 bright orange orange, we say the ratio of plums to oranges is 3 to 1. We can write this with a colon as 3:1.
Ratios can scale up! If we want to keep the same flavor recipe but make more, we can double both parts. Our 3:1 ratio becomes 6:2. The relationship stays exactly the same!
In a bag of marbles, there are 4 blue marbles and 8 red marbles. What is the ratio of blue marbles to red marbles in its simplest form?
- Write down the starting ratio of blue to red marbles: 4 to 8, or 4:8.
- Find a common number that can divide both 4 and 8. The greatest common factor is 4.
- Divide the number of blue marbles by 4: 4 ÷ 4 = 1.
- Divide the number of red marbles by 4: 8 ÷ 4 = 2.
- Combine your new numbers to write the simplified ratio: 1:2. This means for every 1 blue marble, there are 2 red marbles!
