Once we have our question, we gather numbers from different places like surveys, books, or websites. To find the 'mean', we add all these numbers together and then divide by how many numbers we have. This gives us a fair share or average.
The 'median' is the exact middle number when we line them up from smallest to largest. The 'mode' is the number that appears most often. The 'range' is the difference between the biggest and smallest numbers, which shows how spread out they are.
Imagine we want to know how much time classmates spend online. We start with a big research question: 'How do students use technology?' To make this easier to measure, we refine it using secondary questions like: 'How many hours do our classmates spend online each day?' We ask five friends and get these hours: 2, 4, 1, 4, and 9. Let's analyze this data to find the mean, median, mode, and range.

- Gather and organize the data: Our gathered numbers are 2, 4, 1, 4, and 9. First, let's put them in order from least to greatest: 1, 2, 4, 4, 9.
- Calculate the Mean: Add the numbers together (1 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 9 = 20). Divide by the total count of numbers, which is 5. 20 divided by 5 is 4. The mean is 4 hours.
- Identify the Median: Look at our ordered list: 1, 2, 4, 4, 9. The middle number is 4. The median is 4 hours.
- Identify the Mode: Find the number that appears most often. The number 4 appears twice, while the others appear once. The mode is 4 hours.
- Calculate the Range: Subtract the smallest value from the largest value. 9 minus 1 is 8. The range is 8 hours.
