A net is a flat, 2D pattern that you can fold up to make a solid 3D shape. Think of it like an unfolded cardboard box lying completely flat on your desk.

Let's look at a cube. A cube has six square faces. When we unfold it, we get a net made of six connected squares that can fold back into a box.

To find out if a flat pattern is a true net, we analyze how the shapes connect. We must make sure faces do not overlap or leave empty gaps when folded.

Look at a shape with one rectangular bottom and four triangular sides. If you lay it flat, what does its net look like, and what 3D shape does it make?

  1. Step 1: Identify the base. The problem says we have one rectangular bottom.
  2. Step 2: Identify the side faces. We have four triangles attached to the four outer edges of our rectangle.
  3. Step 3: Draw it flat. We place the rectangle in the middle, and draw one triangle pointing outward from each of the four sides.
  4. Step 4: Imagine folding it. The four triangles fold upward. Their top points will all meet at a single peak.
  5. Step 5: Name the 3D shape. A shape with a flat rectangular base and triangular sides that meet at a point is a rectangular pyramid!
