Percentages

Grade 7 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there! I'm Studyfin, your math helper. Today, we are going to explore percentages—a super cool way to talk about parts of a whole!

The word 'percent' literally means 'per hundred'. Imagine a grid broken into 100 equal squares. A percentage is simply telling us how many of those 100 squares are colored in!

numbers

Think of 100% as the entire thing, like a whole pizza or a full battery. If your phone battery is at 50%, it means you have exactly half of your battery power left because 50 is half of 100.

50% Full

We can write percentages in different ways! For example, 25% is the same as the fraction 25/100, which simplifies to 1/4. That is why 25% of a sandwich is the same as one quarter of it!

25% (1/4)
✏️ Worked example

Find 25% of 40.
