Statistics & data analysis

Grade 7 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there! I'm Studyfin, and today we're going to explore how we can use math to make sense of information all around us.

Statistics is like being a detective for numbers. We collect clues, which we call 'data', and then we organize them so we can see the big picture!

One of the best ways to understand our data is by looking at the 'Mean'—which is just a fancy word for the average! It tells us what a typical value in our group looks like.

Mean (Average) Day 1 Day 2 Day 3

Another awesome tool is the 'Range'. The range is the distance between our smallest and largest numbers. It tells us how spread out our data is!

Min: 2 Max: 10 Range = 10 - 2 = 8
✏️ Worked example

Find the Mean (average) of these 4 test scores: 80, 90, 85, and 105.

  1. 1. Add all the data values together: 80 + 90 + 85 + 105 = 360.
  2. 2. Count how many data values you have in total. In this case, there are 4 scores.
  3. 3. Divide the sum by the number of values: 360 ÷ 4 = 90.
  4. 4. The Mean (average) score is 90!
