Math is all around us. When we add or subtract, we are combining or separating groups of things. We can use letters or blank boxes to stand for the numbers we do not know yet.
To solve a problem, we first represent it. For addition and subtraction, a strip diagram helps us see how parts make a whole. If we have 15 green apples and 10 red apples, we join them to find the total of 25.
Multiplication and division are about equal groups. If we have 4 bags with 5 toys in each bag, we multiply 4 times 5 to get 20. If we share 20 toys equally among 4 friends, we divide to find that each friend gets 5.
Multi-step problems combine these actions. We might multiply first to find a total, and then subtract a part. We write these steps out using parentheses to show which math operation to do first.
Sam starts with 50 stickers. He buys 3 packs of stickers, and each pack has 8 stickers inside. Then, he gives 15 stickers to his sister. How many stickers does Sam have now?
- Analyze the problem: We need to find the final number of stickers. We start with 50, add some new packs, and then subtract the stickers given away.
- Represent the new stickers: Sam bought 3 packs of 8. We write this as 3 times 8.
- Calculate the stickers bought: 3 multiplied by 8 equals 24 stickers.
- Add the new stickers to the starting amount: 50 plus 24 equals 74 stickers.
- Subtract the stickers given away: 74 minus 15 equals 59 stickers.
- Write the final answer: Sam has 59 stickers left.
