A histogram groups data into equal intervals, like ranges of ages or scores. The height of each bar shows how many data points fall into that range. This helps us see which groups are the most common.
Imagine we are looking at the test scores of a small class: 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100. Let's practice asking inquiry questions to decide whether a box plot or a histogram is the best tool to show this data.
- First, we generate an informal question: 'Do we want to see the exact grade ranges, or do we want to see the middle score?'
- Next, we analyze our goals. If we want to see the median score and how the middle 50% of students performed, we choose a box plot.
- Then, we generate another question: 'How can we group these scores into intervals of 10 points to see the most common grade range?'
- Finally, we compare the options. A histogram is perfect for showing how many students scored in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, while a box plot is best for showing the overall spread from lowest to highest.
