Budgeting & money management

Grade 8 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there! Ready to learn how to make your money work for you? Let's explore how budgeting helps you reach your biggest goals!

A budget is a plan for your money. It tracks your income, which is the money you receive, and your expenses, which are the things you spend money on. To synthesize information from different sources, you look at receipts, bank apps, and savings goals to create one clear plan.

To synthesize your financial data, you must group your expenses into two main categories: needs and wants. Needs are things you must have to live, like food and shelter. Wants are fun extras, like video games or movie tickets. Sorting these sources of information helps you see where your money actually goes.

Total Budget NEEDS Food & Rent WANTS Games & Fun

When you synthesize information, you combine different details to draw a single, smart conclusion. For example, if your bank statement shows high spending and your savings account shows zero growth, you synthesize these two facts to realize you need to cut back on your wants.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you want to buy a $120 skateboard in three months. You have three sources of information: 1) You earn $50 a month doing chores. 2) You spend $20 a month on snacks. 3) You have $10 already saved. Synthesize this information to find out if you will have enough money in three months.

  1. Step 1: Identify your total income over three months. Since you earn $50 each month, multiply $50 by 3 months to get $150.
  2. Step 2: Identify your total expenses over three months. Since you spend $20 each month on snacks, multiply $20 by 3 months to get $60.
  3. Step 3: Calculate your net savings from your monthly budget. Subtract your total expenses from your total income: $150 - $60 = $90.
  4. Step 4: Combine this with your existing savings. Add your starting $10 to your new savings: $90 + $10 = $100.
  5. Step 5: Compare your total synthesized savings to your goal. Your total is $100, but the skateboard costs $120. You synthesize that you are $20 short and must either earn more or spend less!
