Credit, loans & debt

Grade 8 · Math · Free lesson

Hi! I'm Studyfin, your tutor. Let's learn how borrowing money works and how to plan for it!

When you buy something now but pay for it later, you are using credit. A loan is money you borrow that you must pay back, usually with an extra fee called interest.

To study credit wisely, we must ask good questions. We can generate questions like: 'How does interest change the total cost?' or 'How long will it take to pay this back?'

How does interest change the total cost? How long will it take to pay this back?

Next, we develop a plan to pay off debt. If we make a mistake, we revise our plan by cutting spending or paying more each month to save on interest.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you want to buy a $100 bicycle using a loan. The bank charges $10 in interest. Let's practice generating inquiry questions and building a payment plan for this loan.

  1. First, we generate a question to guide our inquiry: 'What is the total amount we must pay back?' We calculate this by adding the original price to the interest: $100 + $10 = $110.
  2. Next, we generate a second question: 'How much must we pay each month if we want to clear the debt in 5 months?'
  3. We develop our initial plan: Divide the total $110 by 5 months. This gives us a monthly payment of $22.
  4. Then, we revise our plan: What if we can only afford $11 a month? We calculate $110 divided by $11, which means it will now take us 10 months to pay it off.
