Hey there! Ready to discover a math superpower? Today we're learning about exponents, which are just a cool shorthand way to write repeated multiplication!

Imagine you have a number that keeps multiplying by itself, like 2 x 2 x 2. Instead of writing out a long chain of numbers, we can use exponents to keep things neat and tidy!

An exponent has two main parts: the base and the exponent (or power). The base is the big number at the bottom that gets multiplied, and the exponent is the small number up top that tells us how many times to multiply it.

Let's look at 2 to the power of 4 (written as 2⁴). This does NOT mean 2 x 4. Instead, it means we multiply the number 2 by itself 4 times: 2 x 2 x 2 x 2. Let's watch how that builds up to 16!

Evaluating 2⁴ 2 × 2 = 4 × 2 = 8 × 2 Total = 16
✏️ Worked example

Evaluate the exponential expression: 3³ (read as "three cubed" or "three to the third power").

  1. Identify the base and the exponent. In 3³, the base is 3 and the exponent is 3.
  2. Write the expression out as a repeated multiplication problem. The exponent tells us to write the base three times: 3 x 3 x 3.
  3. Multiply the first two numbers together: 3 x 3 = 9.
  4. Multiply that result by the last remaining base number: 9 x 3 = 27.
  5. State your final answer: 3³ = 27.
