Probability basics

Grade 8 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there! Have you ever wondered what the chances are of flipping heads on a coin, or rolling a six on a die? Today, we are going to explore how math helps us predict the future!

Probability is simply a measure of how likely something is to happen. We write it as a fraction, comparing the number of successful outcomes we want to the total number of possible outcomes.

Let's look at a coin flip! Since a coin has 2 sides (Heads and Tails), there are 2 total possible outcomes. The chance of getting Heads is 1 out of 2, which we write as the fraction 1/2.

H T Probability of Heads = 1 / 2 1 desired outcome / 2 total outcomes

Think of probability as a scale from 0 to 1. An event with a probability of 0 is absolutely impossible (like a pig flying), while an event with a probability of 1 is absolutely certain (like the sun rising tomorrow)!

0 (Impossible) 1/2 (Even Chance) 1 (Certain) Where does your event land on the scale?
✏️ Worked example

You have a bag containing 3 red marbles, 2 blue marbles, and 5 green marbles. What is the probability of randomly picking a blue marble from the bag?

  1. Find the total number of possible outcomes by adding all the marbles together: 3 (red) + 2 (blue) + 5 (green) = 10 total marbles.
  2. Identify the number of successful outcomes, which is the number of blue marbles: 2 blue marbles.
  3. Write this as a fraction: Number of blue marbles / Total marbles = 2/10.
  4. Simplify the fraction to its lowest terms by dividing the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common factor, which is 2. 2/10 simplifies to 1/5.
