Statistics & data analysis

Grade 8 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there! Today we are going to explore how data helps us tell stories about the world around us. It's super simple and lots of fun!

Data is just a collection of facts, numbers, or measurements that we gather. When we organize this information, we can see patterns and make smart decisions!

geometry

The 'Mean' is the average of our data. Imagine sharing a pile of building blocks equally among friends so everyone has the exact same amount!

Pile A: 2 Pile B: 1 Both get 1.5! Fair Share (Mean)

The 'Median' is the middle number when we line up our data from smallest to largest. It's like finding the exact middle of a line of kids waiting for lunch!

3 Small 7 Median! 12 Big
✏️ Worked example

Find the Mean and Median of this set of test scores: 5, 8, 11.

  1. First, let's find the Mean (average). Add all the scores together: 5 + 8 + 11 = 24.
  2. Next, divide that sum by the number of scores we have (which is 3): 24 ÷ 3 = 8. So, the Mean is 8!
  3. Now, let's find the Median. Arrange the scores from smallest to largest: 5, 8, 11.
  4. Find the score right in the middle. Here, 8 is in the exact center. So, the Median is also 8!
