A polynomial is just an expression made of variables, numbers, and exponents joined by addition or subtraction. Think of them as train cars hooked together, where each car is called a 'term'!
Let's look at a simple polynomial: x + 3. Here, 'x' is one term, and '3' is another term. Because it has exactly two terms, we call it a binomial!
We can build even bigger polynomials by adding more terms. An expression with three terms, like x² + 2x + 5, is called a trinomial. Each term is separated by a plus or minus sign.
Identify the number of terms and classify the polynomial: 3x² + 5x - 7
- Look at the expression: 3x² + 5x - 7.
- Find the plus (+) and minus (-) signs that separate the parts.
- Count the individual parts: the first term is '3x²', the second term is '5x', and the third term is '-7'.
- Since there are exactly 3 terms, this polynomial is classified as a trinomial!
