Function notation (f(x))

Hey there! Today we are going to explore function notation, which is just a fancy way of writing math rules. It is like a math machine!

In math, we often use rules to turn one number into another. To evaluate these math ideas, we must look closely at the details. We want to find the main idea of how input numbers connect to output numbers.

We write a function as f(x). Read this out loud as 'f of x'. The letter 'f' is the name of our machine, and 'x' is the input we put inside it.

Evaluate f(4) for the function f(x) = 2x + 3.

  1. Identify the key idea: The notation f(4) means we need to replace every 'x' in our rule with the number 4.
  2. Check your understanding: If f(x) = 2x + 3, then f(4) means we calculate 2 * (4) + 3.
  3. Perform the multiplication first: 2 times 4 is 8.
  4. Add the remaining number: 8 plus 3 is 11.
  5. State the final result clearly: f(4) = 11. If we put 4 into our machine, we get 11 out!
