Linear equations

Grade 9 · Math · Free lesson

Hey there! Ready to solve some math mysteries? Today we're learning about linear equations, which are all about keeping things perfectly balanced.

Imagine a classic playground see-saw. If both sides have the exact same weight, it stays perfectly level—this is the core idea behind an equation!

In algebra, we use a letter like x to represent an unknown value. Our goal is to find out what x equals by keeping both sides of our equation completely balanced.

x 2 5 =

To solve for x, we perform the exact same operation on both sides. If we subtract 2 from the left side to leave x alone, we must also subtract 2 from the right side to keep the balance.

x + 2 = 5 - 2 - 2 3 x = 3

By doing the exact same thing to both sides, we simplified our mystery down to x = 3. You've just solved your first linear equation!

✏️ Worked example

Solve the equation: x + 4 = 9

  1. Identify what is happening to the variable x. Here, 4 is being added to it.
  2. To undo adding 4, we use the opposite operation, which is subtracting 4.
  3. Subtract 4 from both sides of the equation to keep it balanced: x + 4 - 4 = 9 - 4.
  4. Simplify both sides to find your answer: x = 5.
  5. Check your work by plugging 5 back into the original equation: 5 + 4 = 9. It perfectly balances!
