Hey there! Today we are going to explore how all the stuff around us is built, from everyday mixtures to the tiny atoms on the periodic table.

Everything in our universe is made of matter. We can classify matter into pure substances like elements and compounds, or mixtures like homogeneous and heterogeneous blends.

An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom, like pure gold. A compound contains different atoms chemically bonded together, like water.

Mixtures are different because their parts are not chemically bonded. Homogeneous mixtures look completely smooth and even, while heterogeneous mixtures have visible, separate parts.

To keep track of elements during reactions, we use the Periodic Table. It acts as a map, showing us the chemical symbols and atomic mass of every atom involved.

✏️ Worked example

Classify a bowl of milk with cereal and identify the elements in its water content (H₂O) using the periodic table.

  1. Analyze the physical appearance of the cereal bowl. Because you can see separate pieces of cereal floating in liquid milk, it is not uniform. Therefore, we classify it as a heterogeneous mixture.
  2. Look at the chemical formula for water, which is H₂O. This represents a compound because it contains different atoms bonded together.
  3. Locate the symbol 'H' on the periodic table to identify the first element. We find 'H' in the top-left corner, which stands for Hydrogen.
  4. Locate the symbol 'O' on the periodic table to identify the second element. We find 'O' on the right side, which stands for Oxygen.
