Ecology is the scientific study of interactions between organisms and their environment. At the center of this study is the 'ecosystem', which includes both living things (like plants and animals) and non-living things (like water, rocks, and sunlight).
Energy enters almost every ecosystem as sunlight. Producers, like green plants, capture this light energy through photosynthesis and turn it into chemical energy (food) that supports the rest of the ecosystem.
Animals are consumers. Because they cannot make their own food, they must eat other organisms to get their energy. This creates a chain of energy transfer called a food chain.
Identify the role of each organism in this simple ecosystem scenario: A garden contains rose bushes, aphids (tiny insects that suck sap from roses), and ladybugs (which hunt and eat aphids).
- Identify the source of energy: The rose bushes use sunlight to make food, making them the Producers.
- Identify the organism eating the producer: The aphids feed directly on the rose bushes, making them Primary Consumers (Herbivores).
- Identify the organism eating the primary consumer: The ladybugs eat the aphids, making them Secondary Consumers (Carnivores).
- Map out the flow of energy: Rose Bush (Producer) -> Aphid (Primary Consumer) -> Ladybug (Secondary Consumer).
