Chemistry: Stoichiometry

Welcome! Today we are going to explore stoichiometry, which is just a fancy word for using chemical recipes to figure out how much stuff we can make!

Think of stoichiometry like baking a cake. If a recipe says 2 eggs plus 1 cup of flour makes 1 cake, you can easily predict that 4 eggs and 2 cups of flour will make 2 cakes. Chemistry works the exact same way!

In a chemical equation, the big numbers in front of the molecules are called coefficients. They act like the ingredient measurements in our recipe, telling us the exact ratio of molecules that react together.

We use these ratios (called mole ratios) to convert from one substance to another. For example, if we have 2 moles of Hydrogen gas, it will react perfectly with 1 mole of Oxygen gas to produce 2 moles of Water.

✏️ Worked example

Using the balanced equation: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. If you start with 4 moles of H₂, how many moles of H₂O can you produce?

  1. Identify the given information: You have 4 moles of H₂.
  2. Look at the coefficients in the balanced equation to find the mole ratio between H₂ and H₂O. The ratio is 2 moles of H₂O for every 2 moles of H₂ (which simplifies to a 1:1 ratio).
  3. Set up the conversion: (4 moles H₂) * (2 moles H₂O / 2 moles H₂).
  4. Calculate the final answer: 4 * (2 / 2) = 4 moles of H₂O.
