Welcome! Today we are going to explore the Periodic Table, which is like the ultimate map for everything in the universe!

The Periodic Table organizes all the known chemical elements. Think of it as a giant, organized grid where every element has its own unique spot based on its structure and behaviors.

Elements are arranged by their atomic number, which is simply the number of protons they have inside their nucleus. As you move from left to right, each element has exactly one more proton than the last!

The table is organized into horizontal rows called 'periods' and vertical columns called 'groups'. Elements in the same column share similar traits, almost like chemical family members!

✏️ Worked example

An unknown element is found in the same vertical column (group) as Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K). What can you predict about how this element behaves?

  1. Identify that Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) are both located in Group 1, the very first column on the left side of the periodic table.
  2. Recall the rule that elements in the same vertical column (group) share similar chemical properties.
  3. Observe that Group 1 elements are highly reactive metals (known as alkali metals) that react vigorously with water.
  4. Conclude that the unknown element will also be a highly reactive metal with properties very similar to Sodium and Potassium.
