Scientists group living things to study them. The animal kingdom is one big group. It has millions of different creatures.
We can ask great questions to learn more. This is called inquiry. For example, we can ask: Do all animals have bones?
Animals are split into two main groups. Vertebrates have backbones, like dogs and birds. Invertebrates do not have backbones, like insects and jellyfish.
Now we can write a short poem about an animal. This is a creative way to share what we know. Writing poems is fun!
✏️ Worked example
Let us think about a backyard squirrel. We want to ask a question to learn more about it. Then, we will write a short, creative poem about it.
- First, we observe the squirrel. It climbs trees and gathers nuts.
- Next, we ask an inquiry question: 'How do squirrels remember where they hide their nuts?' This is a great question to research!
- Now, we plan our poem. We want to use words that show how the squirrel moves.
- We write our poem: 'Quick little squirrel, climbing up high. Looking for nuts under the sky. You jump and you play, then you run away!'
