The Sun, Earth, and Moon are like a big dance team in space. They move in paths called orbits. An orbit is a path that an object takes around another object.
The Earth orbits around the giant, warm Sun. At the same time, the tiny Moon orbits around the Earth. The Sun stays in the center of this big dance.
The Moon does not make its own light. It looks bright because it reflects light from the Sun. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see different amounts of its lit side.
✏️ Worked example
Let us think like a scientist! How do the Sun, Earth, and Moon move in relation to each other? Explain the steps of their paths.
First, look at the center. The Sun is the center of our solar system and does not orbit the Earth.
Next, look at the Earth. The Earth travels in a giant circle, or orbit, around the Sun.
Then, look at the Moon. The Moon travels in a smaller circle, or orbit, around the Earth.
Finally, combine them. As the Earth moves around the Sun, it carries the orbiting Moon along with it!
