Ecosystems & food chains

Grade 3 · Science · Free lesson

Hi there! Today we will write a short report about how energy moves in nature.

An ecosystem is a community of living things. Plants and animals live and grow together here. They need each other to survive.

A food chain shows how energy moves. It always starts with the sun. Next, a plant uses sunlight to make its own food.

Then, an animal eats the plant. This animal is a consumer. Energy moves from the plant to the animal in a line.

☘️

To write a great report, you must explain this path clearly. Use order words like 'first', 'next', and 'then' to guide your reader.

✏️ Worked example

Let us practice writing a short food chain report. We want to explain how energy goes from a leaf to a caterpillar, and then to a bird.

  1. First, write an introduction sentence. Example: 'A food chain shows how living things get food.'
  2. Next, write about the start. Example: 'First, a green leaf gets energy from the warm sun.'
  3. Then, write about the first consumer. Example: 'Next, a hungry caterpillar eats the sweet leaf.'
  4. After that, write about the second consumer. Example: 'Then, a small bird eats the caterpillar.'
  5. Finally, write a ending sentence to wrap it up. Example: 'This is how energy flows in the forest.'
