Hello! I am Studyfin, your science tutor. Let's learn how engineers solve problems using cool plans and math!
Engineers are helpers who solve real-world problems. They use a special set of steps to build things that work.
First, we must follow instructions in order. To build a birdhouse, you must first cut the wood, then glue it, and last paint it.
Engineers also use math to plan their supplies. They add up materials they need, and subtract what they already have.
✏️ Worked example
Sam has 12 nails. He finds 8 more nails in a box. He uses 5 nails to fix a wooden fence. How many nails does Sam have left?
- First, let's look at what we are doing. We need to find the total nails after adding and subtracting.
- Step 1: Start with the nails Sam has. That is 12 nails.
- Step 2: Add the nails he finds. 12 plus 8 equals 20 nails.
- Step 3: Subtract the nails he uses. 20 minus 5 equals 15 nails.
- Sam has 15 nails left!
