A force is simply a push or a pull. Whenever you kick a soccer ball, open a door, or even write with a pencil, you are using forces to make things move!
A push is a force that moves something away from you. When you push a toy car, you give it energy to zoom across the floor!
A pull is a force that moves something closer to you. When you pull a wagon, you are bringing it along behind you as you walk!
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you are playing tug-of-war with your puppy. You pull the rope with a small force, and the puppy pulls back with a giant force. What will happen to the rope?
Identify the two forces acting on the rope: your pull and the puppy's pull.
Compare the strength of the forces. Your pull is small, but the puppy's pull is giant!
Because the puppy's pull is much stronger, the forces are unbalanced.
The rope will move in the direction of the stronger force—meaning the puppy wins this round!
