Hi there! Today we will read a fun poem about our solar system and learn how poems are built!
A solar system has a star and things that travel around it. Our star is the warm, bright Sun. Eight big planets spin and zoom around the Sun in paths called orbits.
Poets write about space using special tools. One tool is a stanza. A stanza is a group of lines that sit together like a paragraph. Let us look at a poem with two stanzas.
Poems also have a rhyme scheme. This is a pattern of rhyming words at the ends of lines. We use letters like A and B to name the rhyming sounds. If two lines rhyme, they get the same letter!
Read this short space poem and find its rhyme scheme step by step: Line 1: The silver Moon glows in the dark, Line 2: It leaves a bright and shining mark. Line 3: The stars are tiny dots of white, Line 4: They make the sky look very bright.
- Look at the last word of Line 1: 'dark'. Since this is our first end sound, we label it with the letter A.
- Look at the last word of Line 2: 'mark'. Does 'mark' rhyme with 'dark'? Yes, it does! So, we label Line 2 with the letter A as well.
- Look at the last word of Line 3: 'white'. Does 'white' rhyme with 'dark' or 'mark'? No, it is a new sound. We label this new sound with the letter B.
- Look at the last word of Line 4: 'bright'. Does 'bright' rhyme with 'white'? Yes, it does! So, we label Line 4 with the letter B.
- Put the letters together in order. The pattern of rhyming sounds is A-A-B-B. That is our rhyme scheme!
