Sound and light are two types of energy. Sound is made when things vibrate. Light is energy we can see with our eyes.
Sound needs to travel through something, like air or water. It moves in waves of wiggles called vibrations. When a drum is hit, it vibrates and pushes the air.
Light is much faster than sound. It does not need air to travel. Light travels in straight lines called rays until it hits an object.
We also learn lessons from stories. A theme is the big lesson of a story, like sharing. A topic is just what the story is about, like dogs.
Let us find the theme of this story: 'Sam shared his flashlight in the dark cave so everyone could see.' Is the theme 'flashlights' or 'helping others'?
- Find the topic first. The story is about using a flashlight in a cave.
- Look at what the character does. Sam shares his light with his friends.
- Think about the big lesson. The author wants us to know that sharing helps everyone.
- Choose the theme. 'Flashlights' is just the topic. 'Helping others' is the real theme!
