Everything around us is made of matter. Matter can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas. We call these the states of matter.
Before you read, look at the title and pictures. What do you think you will learn? Asking questions helps us understand.
A solid has a shape that stays the same. The tiny parts inside a solid are packed very close together. They can only wiggle in place.
A liquid flows and takes the shape of its container. The tiny parts can slide past each other. This is why liquids can pour.
✏️ Worked example
We want to read a story about a puddle that vanishes on a hot day. Let us practice using our reading skills to make a prediction!
- Look at the clues. The title is 'The Disappearing Puddle.' There is a picture of a bright, hot sun.
- Ask a question before reading: 'Where does the water in the puddle go when it gets hot?'
- Recall your science facts. When liquid water gets hot, it turns into gas.
- Make a prediction using the clues. Predict that the liquid puddle will turn into a gas and go into the air.
- Read the story to check your prediction. The story says the sun warmed the water and it evaporated. Our prediction was correct!
