An ecosystem is a community of living things and non-living things. They all work together in one area. Plants and animals need energy to live and grow.
Energy starts with the sun. Green plants use sunlight to make their own food. We call plants producers because they produce, or make, food.
Animals cannot make their own food. They must eat plants or other animals. We call these living things consumers.
We can write a short story or a poem about a food chain. We can also write a brief science report to explain how energy flows.

Explain how energy flows from a forest plant to a hawk, and write a brief description of this chain.
First, identify the producer. The green plant gets energy from sunlight.
Next, find the first consumer. A rabbit eats the green plant to get energy.
Then, find the second consumer. A hawk hunts and eats the rabbit.
Now, write a short, clear description: 'The plant makes food from the sun. The rabbit eats the plant. Finally, the hawk eats the rabbit. Energy flows from the sun, to the plant, to the rabbit, and then to the hawk.'
