Forces & motion

Grade 4 · Science · Free lesson

Hi there! I'm Studyfin, your science buddy. Today, we are going to explore the amazing world of forces and see how they make everything around us move!

A force is simply a push or a pull! Every time you kick a soccer ball, open a door, or even wiggle your toes, you are using forces to make things move.

When you push something, you are using a force to move it away from you. Think of pushing a heavy toy box across the floor or pushing a swing to make a friend go high!

ToyPushing moves things away!

When you pull something, you are using a force to bring it closer to you. This happens when you pull open a drawer to grab your favorite socks, or pull a wagon behind you.

✏️ Worked example

Identify whether each action is a PUSH or a PULL: 1. Closing a heavy door by pressing on it. 2. Dragging a backpack along the school hallway. 3. Reeling in a fish on a fishing line.

  1. Think about the direction of the object. Is it moving away from the person, or coming closer?
  2. For Action 1: When you press on a door to close it, you are moving it away from your body. That means closing the door is a PUSH.
  3. For Action 2: When you drag your backpack behind you, you are holding the strap and bringing the bag along in your direction. That means dragging is a PULL.
  4. For Action 3: When you reel in a fish, you are winding the line to bring the fish closer to your boat or the shore. That means reeling in is a PULL.
